Sinkhole Remediation in Clarkesville, GA
Rapid Response to a Safety Concern
When a local church in Clarkesville, GA discovered a sinkhole forming in the middle of a heavily trafficked green space, immediate action was required. The area served as a common gathering space and posed a potential hazard for visitors and staff. Within one day of receiving the call, our team mobilized to assess the issue and begin excavation to prevent further ground failure.
Excavation & Root Cause Discovery
What initially appeared to be a small sinking area quickly developed into a much larger subsurface problem. As excavation progressed, the depth extended to approximately 16 feet below grade. During the process, we uncovered buried organic debris, including decomposing tree material that had deteriorated over time. This hidden material had created voids beneath the surface, leading to settlement. Approximately 32 cubic yards of debris were removed and hauled off site to eliminate the unstable conditions.
Structural Backfill & Site Restoration
After fully excavating the compromised soil, the area was rebuilt using clean structural fill. Four truckloads of engineered material were imported and placed in controlled 12-inch lifts, with each layer compacted to ensure long-term stability and prevent future settlement. Once the site was restored to original grade, seed and straw were applied to stabilize the surface and return the green space to safe, functional use.
